Paleogene–Miocene reworking of older crust · Region VIEW

Central Pamir

A chain of metamorphic domes exposes rocks that travelled through the middle crust during collision, melting, and rapid exhumation.

REGIONAL SYNTHESIS

Geological story

The Yazgulem, Sarez, Muskol, and Shatput domes record Paleogene crustal thickening followed by Miocene exhumation. Thermochronology places the transition from burial to exhumation near 20–16 Ma in several domes.

Time represented
Paleogene–Miocene reworking of older crust
Tectonic setting
Crustal stacking followed by syn-convergent extension and dome exhumation
Rock record
Amphibolite-facies quartzofeldspathic gneiss, schist, migmatite, leucogranite, and pegmatite
