REGIONAL SYNTHESIS
Geological story
The Chatkal–Kurama terrane is the western part of the Middle Tien Shan arc, west of the Talas–Fergana fault, with more than 30,000 km² of Paleozoic volcanic and plutonic rocks; its arc magmatism is attributed to northward subduction of the Turkestan Ocean. In the Tajik part, the Permian Chorukhdairon pluton of the Mogoltau mountains and the shoshonite–latite volcanic rocks of the Adrasman and Tashkesken–Samgar depressions formed late in the arc's history.
- Time represented
- Paleozoic arc; Cenozoic basin fill
- Tectonic setting
- Middle Tien Shan volcanic arc (Chatkal–Kurama terrane) north of the Turkestan suture, beside the Fergana intermontane depression
- Rock record
- Volcanic and plutonic arc rocks: granitoids, monzonites and shoshonite–latite lavas; young sediments of the Fergana basin
