North Pamir

The northern edge of the Pamir records Paleozoic–Mesozoic ocean-basin evolution and later Cenozoic uplift against the Alai and Tajik basins.

REGIONAL SYNTHESIS

Geological story

Permian to Triassic successions include sedimentary and volcanic records related to back-arc and subduction–accretion systems. Middle to late Miocene sediment provenance changes in the adjacent basin record renewed deformation and surface uplift.

Time represented
Permian–present
Tectonic setting
An outer zone of folded Mesozoic–Cenozoic rocks thrust over the Tien Shan along the Vakhsh–Transalay thrust, and an inner zone of older rocks thrust over it along the Karakul–Darvaz fault
Rock record
Clastic and carbonate successions, volcanic rocks, accretionary complexes, and younger basin-derived conglomerates

DOCUMENTED PROVENANCE

Linked minerals

No reviewed mineral occurrence has been linked yet. This is an evidence gap, not evidence that minerals are absent.
