Tajik Depression

A deep sedimentary archive west of the Pamir that records changing seas, rivers, subsidence, and the outward growth of the mountain belt.

REGIONAL SYNTHESIS

Geological story

More than 6 km of Cretaceous–Cenozoic strata record three stacked basin systems. Marine and evaporitic intervals gave way to a thick Cenozoic foreland succession as Pamir crust thickened; the basin is now being shortened into a fold-and-thrust belt.

Time represented
Cretaceous–present
Tectonic setting
Retro-foreland basin along the western Pamir margin. Russian sources, followed in this guide, count the folded ranges on its eastern side (Vakhsh, Peter the First) as the outer zone of the Pamir; Western studies include them in the basin's fold-and-thrust belt.
Rock record
Fluvial sandstone and conglomerate, marine limestone and shale, evaporites, and syn-orogenic clastic strata

DOCUMENTED PROVENANCE

Linked minerals

No reviewed mineral occurrence has been linked yet. This is an evidence gap, not evidence that minerals are absent.
